Working with Hey Sonny Films
We produced an animated sequence and animated text for this 28-minute Hey Sonny documentary which formed part of the CBBC 'My Life' series. You can watch the full episode on BBC iPlayer.
Hey Sonny Films (formerly Markthree Media) is a Sheffield-based TV production company that was started in 2007 by Kate Monaghan. Having a disability herself, Kate’s goal was to create a company that included people with disabilities behind and in front of the camera.
What is it like when your mum becomes your dad?
A live-action documentary supporting children to understand transgender issues.
Twelve-year-old Tilly's mum came out as transgender when she was 7 years old.
We follow Tilly as she moves up to secondary school. Tilly hasn't yet found the right time to tell her new friends about her family.
With her birthday party looming, Tilly has a dilemma – will she tell her friends that Jack is trans?
To help with her decision, Tilly meets Nat and Faith, both of whom have trans dads and help her feel more confident about sharing her story.
Using 2D animation to convey complex subjects
We regularly work with live-action documentary production companies to communicate and bring to life difficult subjects through animation.
2D animation can be used in particular to illustrate and simplify complex themes for children. It can visualise moments of change such as in this case where it was used to show the transition from one family situation to another.
If you need help communicating a complex issue to a particular audience, why not get in touch about an animation project?
If you know a child who might need support, take a look at the excellent Mermaids charity website.
